In November 1992, representatives from nine major oil companies in the Gulf Co-operation Council met in Bahrain to promote the formation of the Gulf Chapter of the Gas Processors Association. This meeting, which was hosted by the Bahrain National Gas Company (BANAGAS), was also attended by three senior representatives of the GPA and GPA - European Chapter. The formation of a GCC Chapter of the GPA to be based in Bahrain was agreed in the meeting and a steering committee was formed to work on the By-Laws of the Chapter and to arrange for an organisation meeting in April 1993.

It was in the steel city of Jamshedpur, in the year 1948, that three visionaries of industrial medicine as it was known then, nurtured an idea of establishing a National Scientific Forum where problems related to Industrial Medicine could be discussed. The visionaries were Lt. J.R.Kochar, Col. Najib Khan and Maj. R.C.Tarapore. It was through their relentless efforts that the Society for the Study of Industrial Medicine (SSIM) India was ceremonially inaugurated on 9th July 1948, with an initial founder membership of 28. At the very first meeting, these three doyens were elected as the first torchbearers of the organization.
HSE considerations are not only important during development or operational phase but also need to be incorporated during conceptualization and design phase. Importance and role of HSE function has increased immensely. Many factors have contributed to it including more extensive & stringent regulatory requirements, better enforcement & huge penalties, increased complexity of operations & sensitive environments, accountability, stakeholder expectations etc.
